Street Department


Overview

The Street Department cleans, repairs and patches all assessed streets in the City of Youngstown on a daily basis schedule. The Department conducts the City’s Leaf Removal Program, collecting and composting several tons of leaves annually.

Highway Maintenance is responsible, citywide, for over 1100 miles of street and expressway maintenance, including:

  • Fencing and guardrail
  • Berm and slope repairs
  • Drainage and culvert repairs/installations
  • Pavement repairs and resurfacing
  • Strip patching
  • Mowing
  • Bridge maintenance
  • Debris and litter removal
  • Crack sealing
  • Snow and ice control
  • Pothole repair

Who do I call about filling in potholes?

If there are potholes to fill, call the Street Department at 330.744.3179.

Who is responsible for cutting the grass on the neighboring property?

The quick answer is that the owner is responsible. However, in some circumstances the City of Youngstown will try to help. The department you call will depend on the machinery needed to cut the type of property. Here are the possibilities:

  • There is a vacant lot. Call the Street Department at 330.744.3179.
  • There is a vacant house. Call the Housing Inspection Department/Grass Nuisance at 330.742.8806.
  • If a neighbor refuses to keep the grass cut - Call the Police! The City Council of Youngstown has raised the infraction to the level of a misdemeanor 3, and can only be enforced by the Police.

Who is responsible for cutting trees in the neighborhood?

The homeowner is responsible for trees on their property. If the tree is on the devil strip, call the Park Department at 330.742.8711
