Traffic Engineering is a division of the Department of Public Works and is under the direction of the Deputy Director of Public Works, Charles Shasho. Traffic Engineering is divided into two divisions: Signal and Sign.
These divisions are responsible for the following: manufacturing and installing various signs (Stop, Yield, No Parking, School, etc.) as well as traffic signals (installations, repairs, etc.) within the limits of the City of Youngstown. Block party permits (sometimes requiring the closing of city streets) are obtained through this office and must be approved by this division as well as the Chief of Police.
Traffic Engineering is also responsible for all pavement markings on city streets, including crosswalks at schools, etc., and coordination with contractors on various projects involving street or sidewalk closures. Also, any non-functioning traffic signals, missing or down street and traffic signs, as well as broken parking meters can be reported to this office for repair by calling 330.743.1494. After hours sign and signal emergencies may be reported to 330.743.2141.
These divisions work closely with City Council members who request legislation to install stop signs, parking signs, signal installations, school flashers, etc. All such requests must be checked by appropriate personnel to insure that they comply with requirements of the Ohio Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices. The Division also furnishes information regarding the operation of all traffic control devices as requested by Police Agencies, Law Firms, and the general public.
